Emulsion Bitumen: Composition and Classification
Emulsion bitumen is a two-phase system consisting of bitumen, water, and additives that help form, stabilize, and modify its properties. This unique composition makes it highly versatile for road construction and industrial applications.
Bitumen emulsions are categorized into four primary groups, with the first two being the most widely used:
Cationic binders (widely preferred for better adhesion)
Anionic surfactants
Non-ionic surfactants
Clay-based stabilizers
Types of Emulsion Bitumen Based on Fracture Speed
Emulsion bitumen is classified based on its setting speed and application type:
RS – Rapid-Setting Emulsion Bitumen: Ideal for surface treatments and road sealing.
MS – Medium-Setting Emulsion Bitumen: Used in mixing with aggregates for paving.
SS – Slow-Setting Emulsion Bitumen: Suitable for slurry sealing and soil stabilization.
Currently, cationic rapid-setting bitumen is the most widely used type in the country due to its quick drying and strong bonding properties.
